Forum and intensive lectures at Nanjing University

"Analysis of city representations from photographs" /

This class will take the results of the lecture and seminar conducted at Nanjing University in March 2006 about urban photography and the class at the University of Tokyo for first and second year students from April to July of the same year on a similar topic as a starting point to give a lecture on the analysis of representations of urbanity. After a methodological introduction about the use of photography as a method of social research, I will introduce the 2006 seminars in Nanjing and Tokyo. I will also take up several photographers and consider the characteristics of each urban photography. While deepening the understanding of the medium of photography, I would like to give an introduction to a new scientific approach to urbanity. At the same time as using the information on the web page created during the past seminars to prepare for the class, the students participating in this class will be asked to submit "Nanjing photos". If possible, I want to add Chinese students studying in Japan as assistants before and after class for discussions and questions and answer sessions on the theory of photography and urban theory, or about the theory of representation and culture in general.
