" 'Overcoming modernity' and the structure of representation" /
TAKADA Yasunari (English literature, Representation and classical culture, University of Tokyo)

This class seeks to highlight the "structures of representation" of Japan's "modernity" while examining the discussions called " overcoming modernity (jap. kindai no chokoku)". First, the class presents an overview and the problems related to a report of a roundtable conference shortly after the outbreak of the Pacific War with the title “overcoming modernity” and a book with essays written by its participants. Moreover, by theoretically comparing the discussion in Japan "from within" and the criticism from "outside of" Japan, the class reveals "the structure of representation of Japan's ‘modernity’" and at the end touches upon the present-day significance of the debate on "overcoming modernity".
